Watching the aquarium janitor

sitting in a waiting room watching the aquarium janitor work a rock vaccuum, it’s mesmerizing. does anyone know how these things work? it seems to suck up some rocks then drop them, I assume the smaller dirt and fish excrement continues up to it’s fate?
